About Hialeah:
Hialeah is the 5th largest city in Florida, and second only to Miami in South Florida. Hialeah is overwhelmingly Hispanic (mostly of Cuban ancestry) and is ranked #1 in the list of American cities where Spanish is most spoken.
The name Hialeah was given by the native Seminole Indians ("Upland Prairie") to a grassy stretch of land between the Everglades wetlands and the Biscayne Bay. Incorporated in 1925, the area had already attracted business and real estate development years before. The area gained national attention in 1925 with the opening of Hialeah Park, which became immediately one of the main venues for horseracing. Cattle farming was the main economic activity, and aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss took an interest in the area, while developing real estate in neighboring Miami Springs. In 1937, another aviation pioneer, Amelia Earhart departed from an airfield in Hialeah for her doomed attempt to fly around the world.
Hialeah has gone a long way since its beginning in the 1920s. Today, its motto "City of Progress" reflects very well the spirit of Hialeah: from its humble beginnings, the city has grown to a population of 236,000, transforming itself from a cattle farming area, to one of the largest sources of jobs in Miami Dade County. Hialeah saw a rapid growth in the 60s and 70s due to the influx of Cuban exiles settling in the area, transforming it through hard work and a strong desire to rebuild their lives.
Real estate in Hialeah has enjoyed a fast appreciation along with the rest of Miami. Once the location of many factories, the city is mainly comprised today of residential neighborhoods, and in the last years an effort has been underway by the local government to improve the parks and recreational facilities, boosting quality of life and real estate values in most areas.
Today Hialeah plays a key role in the local events in South Florida, and the weight of the city is felt in decisions taken by county government. Real estate developments, and renovation of older facilities are underway in Hialeah, taking advantage of its privileged location in North Miami-Dade, its proximity to Broward County, and excellent communication through major roads or by rail. Conveniently located between the main airports in Miami (Miami International Airport to the South and Opa-Locka Airport to the North) the City of Hialeah is an excellent location for businesses and economic activity.
